Tungsten carbide button has good hardness (86 ~ 93HRA, equal to 69 ~ 81HRC), good heat hardness (reach 900 ~ 1000 ℃, keep 60HRC), good wear resistance and other excellent performances. It is a high hardness refractory metal carbides (WC, TiC) micron powder as a main component, cobalt (Co) or nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo) as a binder, in a vacuum furnace or a hydrogen reduction furnace sintered powder metallurgy products. ⅣB, ⅤB, ⅥB metal carbides, nitrides, borides, and so on called as cemented carbide, due to their particularly high hardness and melting point.

ⅣB, ⅤB, ⅥB metal and carbon consist of tungsten carbide, which can fill the voids in the metal lattice and retain the original metal lattice to form interstitial solid solution because of the small radius. Under appropriate conditions, such solid solutions will dissolve its elements gradually until saturated. When the dissolved carbon content exceeds the limit (eg. titanium carbide Ti︰C = 1︰1), the lattice pattern will be changed so that the original metal lattice changes into another form of the metal lattice, which called this solid solution mesenchymal compound.

Tungsten carbides, especially ⅣB, ⅤB, ⅥB melting point are more than 3273K. Most of carbide has great hardness (micro hardness is higher than 1800kg / mm2, equal to a Moh's hardness 9). They are difficult to break down at high temperatures, and have great antioxidant capacity than the metal component. However, all carbides are easily oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere at high temperature actually, which is a distinct weakness of carbides.

Besides of carbon atoms, nitrogen atom and boron atom can also enter the metal lattice through the gaps to form interstitial solid solution. They have electric conductivity, thermal conductivity, high melting point, high hardness, but also fragile. Tungsten carbide is composed of two parts: one is the hardening phase, and the other part is a binder metal. The hardening phase is a transition metal in the periodic table, such as tungsten carbide, titanium, tantalum carbide, their melting point is above 2000 ℃, and even more than 4000 ℃. In addition, transition metal nitrides, borides, silicides has similar properties, it can also serve as cemented carbide hardening phase, which determines the good hardness and wear resistance.
